Akagera National Park, Rwanda – My trip to Rwanda in September was a great learning experience for me in many ways. While I was only in the country for a one-week study tour, I was able to learn about different areas in a short period of time. I was very surprised to realize how small Howard was. You can drive from one end of Massachusetts to the other in about 6 hours because it is the size of Massachusetts. I was also amazed at how clean it was and how comfortable I felt with every step. The people of Rwanda are dedicated to protecting the streets and residents from harm.
We started the trip with two days in Kigali, staying at the Kigali Serena Hotel and Paradise Retreat and visiting the Genocide Memorial. Unfortunately, it is difficult to enter the museum and gardens to commemorate the disaster in this country. However, it is an important stop to make while in Kigali.

After that we went gorilla trekking in Volcano National Park. During the trip, I visited the Hirwa family enjoying the Eucalyptus trees near the forest and in the farmlands. After our trip, we spent a night at the Kivu Serena Hotel. Finally, we ended our trip by attending the annual gorilla riding ceremony on the Kwita Trail. This festival is attended by dignitaries from all over the world and many locals who have the opportunity to participate for free. This year, 23 guests have already been selected and awarded the prize of choosing the names of 23 gorillas born between September 2017 and September 2018.
Map Of Rwanda’s Akagera National Park With Approximations Of Each…
In addition to gorilla trekking, which was one of the best experiences of my life, I joined six other travelers for a day trip through the 1,200 square kilometers of Akagera National Park. I would like to share with you the details of our trip to the park, as this will be a new area of exploration for future travelers to Rwanda! Currently there is a camp in the park called Karenge Bush Camp, while another camp called Magashi Camp owned by Desert Safaris is currently under construction.
We went to Kigali Airport to board the helicopters to the resort, which is 25 minutes east of Rwanda. It’s a great view from the top to see the thousand loop hill on the road! We were greeted by some townspeople and met by Chris Roach from Desert Safaris who helped us into the park in a Land Rover.
We spent the next hour on a game drive in the park to see the wildlife. During the trip, we saw camels, wildebeest, topi, crows, giraffes, crocodiles, zebras, various ants and various birds. You can also see hyenas, tigers, tigers, elephants, cheetahs, sitatunga, Shoebill pig (one of the 500+ different bird species in the park) and more in the park! There are many open spaces where you can see different animals from lakes and different open spaces. We then saw Rwanyakazinga Lake and were surprised by a lovely picnic lunch from Desert Safaris.
After lunch we boarded a boat to explore the lake further and the other delegates and I realized we were looking at some of the biggest crocodiles and giant spinys we had ever seen. We also saw the site where the new Magashi camp is currently being built. At that time, only water tanks were installed, but once installed, the camp will consist of 6 tents. Activities on offer include boating, fishing, game drives and fishing trips. Opening to its first guests in March 2019, I can’t wait to see what our first customers will see when they leave!

On the way back to Kigali, the sun peeked through the clouds to create beautiful rays floating across the landscape. Complete “see you later” and sent to educate our clients, colleagues, friends and family about the treasures of Rwanda. Future visitors can experience city exploration in Kigali, gorilla trekking in Volcano National Park, cycling in Nyungwe National Park and game viewing in Akagera National Park.
The dry season is best for gorilla trekking between December and February and June to mid-September. Currently, tourists who spend at least three nights in Akagera Forest or Nyungwe Forest National Park between November and May can enjoy a 30% discount on gorilla trekking. It’s a great way to see more of Rwanda and get a cheap price! I’m so excited for travelers to explore all that Rwanda has to offer! I remember with my family. I said, “How do we think it’s fun to go to a place full of dangerous animals? We serve ourselves as food. “I was worried (especially when we saw the elephant pass our car and I froze!).
A few seconds into the park, my mind was blown. I don’t want to leave the park with any of my birds that I’ve never seen up close and personal while a hippo swims, and here’s why.
