The original inhabitants of the area were the San Bushmen (also known as the Basarwa people in Botswana). They were nomadic hunters who moved from place to place in search of food sources, such as fruits, water and wild animals. Now you can see San paintings on the rocky hills of the park.
In the early 20th century, the area that became Botswana was divided into different land systems. At the time, much of the park was classified as Crown land. The idea of creating a national park that would protect various local wildlife and promote tourism was first proposed in 1931. 24,000 km next year
In 1943, there was a strong influx of tsetse throughout the region, which delayed the creation of a national park. By 1953, the project again received government attention: 21,000 km
(8,100 sq mi) proposed to become a reserve. The Soap Reserve was officially established in 1960, but was smaller than originally intended. In 1968, the reserve was declared a National Park.

At that time, there were many industrial settlements in the region, especially in Serondel, where the forestry industry spread. These settlements were gradually pushed out of the park, and only in 1975 the entire protected area was freed from human activities.
