Hwange National Park is home to one of the largest elephant populations in Africa. As the summer rains recede (around April each year), the approach of the dry season limits water resources throughout the savannah forests of southern Africa, and Huang’s herds become increasingly dependent on the limited number of water pools scattered throughout the park.
In the drier months, dozens of elephants congregate, and when water supplies run low, eventually hundreds congregate to quench their thirst. The competition for water in these pits creates intense interactions between the herds that provide the opportunity to observe elephant behavior at its most exciting and undoubtedly make this place one of the best places to see elephants in Africa.
The constant flow of the Chobe River provides an uninterrupted supply of water to the elephants of Chobe National Park. Most safaris in Africa are done by vehicle, but the river offers a wonderful opportunity to see the Chobe’s wildlife, especially its elephants, from water rather than land.
When exploring the Chobe floodplains on safari, a boat trip allows you to get closer to the elephants than you would in a conventional vehicle, often with a jean and tunic in hand. Chobe is undoubtedly one of the most incredible safari destinations in the world. It covers a large area and is divided into 3 sections, Kasane and the riverside area, Savoti and Linati.
The most accessible part of the park is along the river, and day trips can easily be arranged from Kasane or even Livingstone, Zambia, or Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
To get to Savuti or Linyanti, you have to take a multi-day trip deep into Botswana (if you’re driving, you’ll need a 4×4) or you can fly (but these are usually expensive).
Africa’s Best Safari Country Of 2024
Of all the safaris I’ve done in Africa (and I’ve done quite a few), Chobe is where I’ve seen the most safari “action”. Think more leopards (including one eating a dead elephant), hyenas fighting over the carcass of a bay elephant, lions, and literally thousands of beautiful (live) elephants.
I traveled through Khwai on Rock My Botswana and Victoria Falls Adventure in 2019 and this is a place I recommend adding to any Botswana itinerary. Can’t wait to go back next year!
Firstly, it is a stunning location and attracts many animals as the Khoi River flows through the area.
Even better, most of the park’s campsites overlook the water, and given the abundance of elephants, you can easily spot them from your camping chair!

A trip deep into the delta usually means a short flight from Maun or a boat ride through unique waterways to get to your camp on one of the islands.
This alone makes the Delta a truly unique destination, but add to that the abundance of wildlife (including lots of elephants) and you have a wild safari!
Most Okavango Delta safaris include canoe trips, which allow you to get very close to the wildlife and see the elephants from a different perspective than a typical car safari. You can also take scenic flights over the Okavango Delta.

Amboseli National Park is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful safari destinations in the world.
Not only is it famous for its huge herds of elephants (don’t let the image fool you, I saw a lot of huge herds – unfortunately only face to face) but it has Mount Kilimanjaro as its backdrop.
The park is a 4-hour drive from Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, making it a great weekend outing or a stopover en route to Tanzania or Mombasa.
I’ve never actually been on safari in Tsavo, but I’ve passed through it many times by train.

This park is located between Amboseli National Park and Mombasa and is divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West. With an area of 22,000 square kilometers, this park is the largest national park in Kenya.
The last time I boarded the train, I saw 13 herds of elephants outside the window. The park is known for its “red” elephants, because of the volcanic grounds they like to bathe in!
Liwand National Park, located in the southeast of Malawi, is not as famous as parks like the Kruger or Serengeti, but it is a wonderful place to see elephants and one of the quietest parks.
